Question for the ladies, should I buy sneakers or sandals to wear with cargo shorts?

My sneakers are worn out and it's time to buy new summer shoes. I have a pair of flip flops but looking for something to wear when I do a lot of walking (sporting events, walking in the city, hiking, etc). Any ideas? I'm thinking sneakers (with low cut socks) or some kind of sandal with straps (that doesn't look geeky).
