How to start a cargo forwarding business or balikbayan box business?

I am planning to start a cargo forwarding service.I don't know how to get started and what are the legal requirements involved, like customs , size of boxes, cargo liners etcHow to start a cargo forwarding business or balikbayan box business?
The legal requirements will most likely largely depend on the country in which you plan to conduct your business from. I would start by finding companies that do what you want to do and working for them or studying how they do what they do. With the names a few larger companies and a good search engine you can find just about anything. How to start a cargo forwarding business or balikbayan box business?
I recommend contacting an existing reputable balikbayan box company and start as an agent or affiliate. Its better to start small and gradually increase the size of your operations. Report Abuse

Living in The Philippines, I like to order thru Ebay, etc.,

however, I am wondering if anyone receives articles mailed and puts them in a balikiyan box and when its full, ships it to me for an amouunt plus the balikyan forex shipping.

I need credible referances.

What's the cheapest way to ship a 60 pound cargo internationally?

I want to receive a 60 pound cargo from USA to Saudi Arabia, which is the cheapest? sea? air? i am not in a hurry. What's the cheapest way to ship a 60 pound cargo internationally?
You may want to look into a company like Bongo International http://www.BongoUS.com . They will set you up with your own US address so that you can make purchases from any US based online store鈥ven if they don鈥檛 ship internationally. Have the goods shipped to Bongo鈥檚 warehouse and they will consolidate all your orders and have them shipped to your door. You can save hundreds of dollars. If you find a company that doesn鈥檛 take international credit cards, they will make the purchase for you for a small fee. Additionally, sea freight is only less expensive when you are shipping over 150lbs. Air is actually the best way to go at that weight and Bongo gives you 50% off DHL's air rates. What's the cheapest way to ship a 60 pound cargo internationally?
Sea always the cheapest for international use.

  • How do I get my dogs ready to fly in cargo on a plane?

I need to fly my dogs to my home from where they are.How do I get my dogs ready to fly in cargo on a plane?
Call the airline and let them know. They charge you a fee.

Buy crates that are big enough for them.

Don't let them eat too much the day before, and don't let them have water just before.

Put ID tags on their collars.

Arrive early at the airport. You need to take them around to cargo.

Have their favorite beds, blankies and toys at the destination when they arrive.

Believe it or not, your dogs know whether you are in the cabin on the same plane. Their noses are that good. How do I get my dogs ready to fly in cargo on a plane?
Strap some feathers to them and throw them off the roof. That should get them trained for it. And if you throw them hard enough, you may get them home without the aid of an aircraft.

I have a cargo van and need to make some money but need some ideas for items to be transported. What are some products that could be hauled with a cargo van?
What you really need is part time or full time employment. in many cities there are delivery companies that hire drivers with pu trucks or vans to deliver products for them. check craig's list jobs for opportunities. non profit org. also need the same for pu of donated items and will pay you to do so. newspapers are another possible area for delivery employment, same for route delivery of products.

  • What is a cargo pilots salary?

I hope to become a cargo pilot. I'm wondering how much they get paid. What is a cargo pilots salary?
As a cargo pilot, you will most likely start in the 25K range, as a minimum, and as time and aircraft progress, you could end up making more than 150K. Its all about the skills you acquire as you progress, and the company that keeps you.

At retirement, you could very well be in the 180K area. What is a cargo pilots salary?

Is it true that you can get free flights if you are carrying the plane's cargo documents?

I heard about this years ago and it may have been rubbish or it may have been true but is no longer. Is it true that you can get free flights if you are carrying the plane's cargo documents?
    Yes, it is true!

Just as true as getting paid $1500 dollars a week for being a secret shopper!

Or getting a $50 dollar gift certificate to Chilis just by answering the question, ';Who is hotter, Brittany or Jessica?'; Or maybe a free Razor phone just for clicking on the correct picture of the razor phone.

    It is all rubbish!

Now, there are couriers that fly quite often, carrying everything from cash money to checks to official documents, bank notes, bonds, etc. They work for a courier company, not the airline, and they are not on holiday, it is a job for them.

Most airlines have a document bag in the cockpit for carrying co-mail, paychecks, etc.Is it true that you can get free flights if you are carrying the plane's cargo documents?
    dont know
It is carried by Pilot so he is getting free flight even getting paid to fly
I wouldn't have thought so - there are two types of cargo documentation - loadsheets which describe to the pilot and groundcrews the loading of freight (how much, where) for balance - and a cargo manifest, detailing what and how much. Both have to have copies given to the Captain - so no...unless it was a more unusual operation, I'd say not - primarily because there isn't a special person on board to carry the cargo documents.

The people that deal with that are loadmasters who stay on the ground - and the pilots.
Not true at all. There is not a special person flying to carry those documents.

How wide does cargo need to be before it is considered an oversize load and requires a permit?

I live in oklahoma and need to transfer a storage building which is 8 ft wide approx. 15 miles . do i need a permit for this.

Plus FYI please don't tell me where i can get the answer I need a real answer here not some body tellin me to look at web site that i have looked at 10,000 times for the answer. How wide does cargo need to be before it is considered an oversize load and requires a permit?
you will be ok at 8 feet or less. more than that, then you will need to plackard it for wide load with the proper permits. You may not be able to move it yourself, you may need to hire a trucking company to move it legally. How wide does cargo need to be before it is considered an oversize load and requires a permit?
you are allowed 8.5 wide 13.6 high on most roads. check state maps and local (ie..no trucks allowed, low overhead clearance) roads for restrictions.
In Oklahoma, any vehicle / cargo exceeding 102 inches in width requires a permit.
I also have lived in Oklahoma City for a while. I did a lot of construction around there for a while. You won't need a permit for 8' ft wide trailer. Just be sure to put red flags on the side of your trailer.
If you want a proper answer you need to get off the net and get on the phone, would you really trust some answer that Joe blow gave you on the net without being able to confirm things for yourself. How long is this thing...how high is it...is it on a trailer that is legal....is it classified as a load or does it have wheels on it???????????
    more than 8ft wide.

What risks are faced flying a cat as cargo? Could you share your experiences?

I will flying an airline that only permits pets to be flown as cargo. My gravest fear is the death of my beloved cat while in flight. He has flown in cabin before(12 hours), but not cargo. The flight ahead is about the same duration. Please share your advice or experiences in this situation. Thank you on advance! What risks are faced flying a cat as cargo? Could you share your experiences?
You didn't say what airline you will be flying. I have always flown with my two on Continental. They have special pressurized temperature controlled cargo areas for animals. The crate has to be large enough for kitty to stand and turn around in. It has to have the cup clipped on the inside, one for food and one for water. Airlines will not accept kitty if she has been sedated so don't do that. I always include a towel in the crates for kitty to curl up on. Since the fight is a 12 hour flight you may want to get a crate large enough to include a small litter box and I would use shredded newspaper instead of regular litter.

My two were not happy with me at all, but they did make it through their flights.

The pilots are told there are animals on the flight so before they close the cabin door ask the flight attendant to let you know kitty made it on ok.

Good luck with everything. What risks are faced flying a cat as cargo? Could you share your experiences?
Check on what other animals will be in the cargo hold at the same time. I know we had to move our dogs to another flight because there was a cat on the flight that they were on. It just stresses them up.

On the other hand, you might be best sedating your cat - check with someone who deals officially with transporting vehicles
I know it's irrelevant but your question made my mind boggle - ';flying a cat';. I didn't know they had wings! Sorry just my daft sense of humour!

Good luck, I'm sure Pussy will be fine in Cargo, it's not as if the airline don't know how to convey animals by air.

What businesses would have a need for enclosed cargo trailers?

I have already thought of landscapers and gardeners can you think of any more? We are trying to get some more customers to know we have cargo trailers for sale. What businesses would have a need for enclosed cargo trailers?
I had a kitchen remodeling business and couldn't do my job with out one. Was great for hauling my tools and equipment. Plus i brought a lot of my cabinets to the jobsite in one.

You could also add in people who do a lot of construction. Many uses for these trailers. I have seen plumbers and electricians use them. Sometimes they use thier own vehicle in the trade and instead of ruining there vehicle it is better to use a trailer to haul equipment. What businesses would have a need for enclosed cargo trailers?
Contractors, furniture stores, delivery services in some cases.
Any one who rents equipment such as ATVs or home improvement professionals. I am actually looking one to use to haul and store my ATVs and garden equipment. Lots of people will buy them. Put an ad in the paper. Good Luck!

What's the best way to send a cargo shipment to Kaduna in Nigeria?

I need to send a shipment of clothes and toys to an orphanange in Kaduna. Can anyone recommend a shipper? What's the best way to send a cargo shipment to Kaduna in Nigeria?
Contact a regular forwarding agent in your home country and arrange for shipment on a conference vessel. (Non-conference vessels do not guarantee to reach the port of destination). Ask if you can arrange door-to-door delivery (duty and delivery to Kaduna included). The forwarder's agent in Nigeria will then do customs clearance and arrange either for someone to collect or onward transport (but I recommend collection). True, there are pirates and nothing much moves without ';dash'; (tips) but the experienced forwarding agent should be capable of managing it all for you. What's the best way to send a cargo shipment to Kaduna in Nigeria?

What is the average income of a cargo pilot?

How much do Fedex and UPS pilots make in a year? What is the average income of a cargo pilot?
Well Fed Ex and UPS pilots are at the top of the list in pilots and have been flying for a long time. I would not be surprised if there average salary was around $120,000 I know the most senior captains can make up to $200,000 a year but that is after A LOT of time flying.

Now for a cargo pilot flying a 747-200 for Atlas or Southern Air their average is probably more around $65,000-75,000 and for a pilot flying smaller planes like Cessnas or older props they will be lucky to make more than $30-35,000.What is the average income of a cargo pilot?
A cargo pilot, like passenger airline pilots, will make anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000 USD / year or so. Most cargo pilots are on the lower end of that scale. FedEx and UPS are two of the top paying airlines and they will be at the upper end if you stay with them long enough. Almost every airline pilot out there would love to work there because of the pay and stability. They are also 2 of the most difficult airlines to get an interview with. You have to know several pilots who fly for them and who have also flown professionally with you. Not only that, you typically need to have one of them sponsor you.
I flew cargo (mail) for 5 years as a first officer on a grand caravan, there were teenagers working construction who made more then me...

What is the cost of the average cargo aircraft rental?

Depends on the size and distance u need.

If you need a plane the size of a Learjet and are traveling cross country, it would be about 20,000 dollars excluding fuel costs.

What is it like to be a cargo pilot?

This is one of the many careers I'm looking into and am curious as to what it entails, what kind of salary I'd be looking at, and what kinds of degrees and certifications are necessary. What is it like to be a cargo pilot?
I'm going to tell you right now, hauling freight can be a tedious, stressful job. However, I would not trade it for anything (well, maybe a cushy corporate job) I get tons of flight time, (at least 40 hours a week) and I get to fly one of the coolest jets out there.

First and foremost, you do not need to have an atp. (although it helps) We have a guy that came to us with 3500 hours, but he was 22, so at that time not eligible for the atp. We ended up having to get him a commercial type rating in our lear 24. However, this is not the norm. We also hire people to fly sic in 310's and 410's, with the intent of moving them into the left seat, once those guys move to my right seat. (And of course, when they have the time required to pass a 135 ride)

As far as the job itself is concerned, it beats flying a bus. (did that for 3 years for Air Wisconsin in the crj) I work usually 6pm to 6am, 4 nights a week, and in that time I go as far west as IL, and as far south as GA. (I'm based in Teterboro)

Nights usually go like this- Arrive at the airport, preflight, make sure the weight is in limits (dispatch usually does our weight, balance, and performance), and look over and sign off on the flight plan. After we check the weather, we head out and do the usual pilot stuff (b.s. checklist items like getting clearances, and starting engines...sometimes life would be so much faster if they just let me skip that step...) So we head out and usually hit pittsburg, columbus, midway, raleigh, atlanta, back to raleigh, philadelphia, buffalo, and then home. Everything works together usually. As we land at each stop, the controller usually knows where we're going, and clears us directly to our ramp. Two fuel trucks pull up (if we need fuel) and start pumping into the tip tanks, while the couriers come up and take what they need to take off the jet, and throw what they need to throw on the jet. During this time, if we're not switching aircraft (some jets are preloaded for a different portion of our trip when we get there) we keep the engines running. As soon as the fuel trucks are done, and the door closes, we're off to the next stop. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming, especially when you're a few minutes late, due to delays, and your carrying time sensitive items (cancelled checks that need to be there by midnight, or the company doesn't get paid for the run) But for the most part, it's a fun job, and a great way to kill a few hours in the logbookWhat is it like to be a cargo pilot?
You could probably find out more by contacting UPS or any cargo carrier or search the web.

In general, you will need a bachelors degree. You will need a commercial, Instrument, ATP (airline transport pilot) rating and probably several thousand hours of flying experience. You will be required to maintain a first class medical. this involves a pretty thorough physical every six months. Recurrent training is usually every six months. Any DUI history in your driving record wont be a good thing.

most cargo flying happens at night, so you probably wont need any cool pilot sunglasses.

I think the average pay in cargo for pilots is currently about 140k$ per year.

Your first flying job will be when you obtain your commercial and instructor rating. You will earn about 20 dollars per hour and instruct all the time to get enough hours to get a job flying anything at all. It is a long tough road to get multi engine and turbine time. The folks hiring know pilots need that experience and at that level, there just plain are more pilots with those qualifications, so the pay is miserable when weighed against the cost of your education and training.

The big picture for those who persevere is a good paying job. used to be, flying freight payed less than the airlines, I suspect that picture is changing.

Look at schools like Embry Riddle, UND University of North Dakota, University of Illinois Aviation, most big colleges have professional pilot programs. You dont need to go this route, your flying experience you can obtain on your own while getting your degree, but these programs wrap it all up in one nice and usually very expensive package.

Flying for a living could be great, I just heard a UPS 767 go over my house landing at a hub near me. It's 3:40 in the morning. :) If you love flying, go for it, it can be a great career.

Things like heart trouble, diabetes, epilepsy, even kidney stones can get you grounded, so think about what degree you want and a backup plan for your career.

    Best of luck,

    John
it depends on who you are working for. UPS and FedEx fly mainly at night and i would assume you get paid a decent salary. I work for a small cargo operator. We fly at all hours of the day and night. having a schedule would be nice but our company works on demand. we have to be wheels up within an hour of getting called in.. on the other hand, having a scheduled run in the freight business isnt all that appealing either, since you fly to the same places day after day..

you still need all the same degree and certification requirements that you would for any other flying job.. but the outlook for cargo operators is healthy and worth the time and money.. people are always gonna need to ship stuff.. i expect the salaries to remain decent if not improve over the next decade.. but really, it just depends on who you work for..
No doubt this profession will fetch you loads of money, but what i believe is being a cargo pilot is actually being a truck driver. The only differnce is salary.

I think you should go for pessenger pilot.
Just a correction for John above - in the States, most part 141 schools no longer require a Bachelor's degree. High school or GED is all that's required, as well as English proficiency and good health.
John's answer just about covers it. You will need those cool looking sunglasses though. Often you will be headed towards a rising or setting sun, depending on whether you're starting or finishing your day.
no one applauds as you land smoothely.

Atir B%26gt; ..passenger pilot, which in return turns out to be just an overpayed bus driver.
The youngest stewardess doesn't come to the flight deck to bare her breasts when you land smoothly.

It is OK but people will look at u as if u are doing something wrong ..........so better run in running shorts ..........
the idea is the lighter/looser the shorts the faster you will run, but i would just run in whatevers more comftorble....

its fine to run in cargo shorts but the ';real'; runners will most likely look at you funny =P my advice: train hard and then you can wear a clown suit for all anyone cares. haha
i feel that cargo shorts are tighter and keep me from running my faster and with running shorts i feel more free and running seems easier. and no there is nothing wrong with running in cargo pants it might just be harder though.
it's okay, but sounds uncomfortable, and you probably wont look like a runner, so you may just look crazy, i would stick with cotton or mesh shorts
    you might get chafed!

How close is technology to creating civilian cargo and passenger aircraft that are unmanned?

By unmanned, I mean the aircraft are either operated by pilots on the ground, or operate autonomously. Are advances in military technology such as the creation of the MQ-9 reaper and the RQ-4 Global Hawk going to transfer to the civilian world? have any prototypes been made? Is general aviation as well as commercial aviation close to losing its aerial pilots? Should civilian pilots be fearing the loss of their jobs in the air or completely?

Basically, how far along in unmanned technology outside of the military. How close is technology to creating civilian cargo and passenger aircraft that are unmanned?
The technology exists today... but it would be a problem of cost and public opinion.

There are solutions to the problems listed; i.e. bad weather, mechanical problems, etc. in order to make due without pilots. For example, an engine fire in a modern aircraft is incredibly simple to handle; the buttons that the pilots needs to press actually light up, the checklist appears on the computer screen, and each time the pilot does something the item is automatically checked off. Remove the pilot, and have the computer action the items itself; problem solved. Modern jets are certified to auto-land on a single engine. Remember that DC10 that lost all hydraulics, and had only engine power to try to land? Well the technology exists today where the autopilot flies the plane using engine control only (this technology was developed as a direct response to that accident; but deemed to costly to implement onto all aircraft worldwide). But the technology does exist!

The cost involved with upgrading every aircraft, every runway, all the navigational aids around the world, would be very pricey. Also, trying to convince people that flying around without a pilot is safe, also becomes challenging.

This was shown quite clearly in an international human factors conference where Airbus introduced technology that would save lives. Instead of the traditional ';whoop whoop! Terrain! Pull up! Pull up!'; warning that alerts pilots to impending collision with terrain/mountains, Airbus was going to upgrade the autopilot system to respond instead with: ';whoop whoop! Terrain! Take your hands off the controls!'; and the autopilot would immediately take appropriate action to save the plane and the lives of the passengers on board. Airbus' theory was that if the manufacturer could save lives, at little to no cost, then they had the responsibility to do so. Unfortunately, airlines, pilots, and passengers worldwide overwhelmingly rejected the new technology, because nobody ever wanted a computer to override the pilots.

Cost and public opinion are far more powerful factors than ';wouldn't that be cool'; or ';is it possible to do that?';. Its kind of the world we live in... but no doubt in my mind the technology exists. Reliability might come in to question, but the ability exists today. How close is technology to creating civilian cargo and passenger aircraft that are unmanned?
You won't see passenger planes that are unmanned. You have peoples lives at risk. Do you think Sullenberger would have been able to do the job that he did with not being in the plane? Part of flying is feel. Also, if there is an emergency, the pilot needs to make decisions. I cannot see someone picking up the phone to talk to someone on the ground. They would probably outsource that.

To put a different way, would you put your life in the hands of someone that would not suffer the same fate as you if they make a mistake?
We have the technology today; but do you really want MicroSoft flying any plane that you are in? They can't even get a simple home computer to work right.

How would you like to see this message while on your take off run or during your approach/landing.

    '; Upgrades are available for your computer. After uploading your computer will shut down and restart. This process may take a few minutes';
The technology exists to allow for unmanned flight but it will never be allowed to be implemented on passenger planes where people`s lives are in the balance.
They can do it now... but I want to see the first set of passengers faces when you tell them that there wont be a pilot on board today... and besides there not paying their pilots anyways why not keep them up there lol
I pray to God that never happens, as even the best computer systems fail.
We're pretty far from having unmanned passenger aircraft.

Cargo, maybe, but definitely not passenger. People's lives are at stake.

Note that these ';military'; planes were designed with the purpose of spying missions, not replacing the roles of main combat aircraft.

It's not possible to program a computer that can easily adapt to and react appropriately to all situations that a person can. Unless every single flight is identical, there is no way unmanned aircraft for passenger flights will come.

Operating on the ground for civilian aircraft is possible but economically unfavorable. In order to operate such an aircraft you'll need advanced communication equipment that can precisely mimic the actions of a human in perfect real time (no lag). This is far too expensive to implement and it's just cheaper to have the pilot in the aircraft.

Will my hamsters survive with the cargo for a 45 minute flight on an airplane?

My plane i'm going on won't allow me to bring my hamsters for carry on. Is it dangerous for them to be with the cargo? Will my hamsters survive with the cargo for a 45 minute flight on an airplane?
As long as the airline puts them in a heated and pressurized cargo hold (like any other pet), they'll be fine.

Check with your airline. If you're flying Southwest, you won't be able to bring them on at all. They have a strict no-pet policy.

I'm curious though. A 45 minute plane ride is only a couple hundred miles by car. You could drive. Will my hamsters survive with the cargo for a 45 minute flight on an airplane?
Rodents are forbidden to travel on commercial aircraft.

What if the rodents got loose and chewed on the plane's electrical wiring.
I'm not that sure. Check with a vet. Also, confirm from the airline that the cargo compartment of the very plane you are flying in is pressurized. If not, there'll be no pressure, no oxygen and the temperature would be -50 degrees Celsius. Good luck !
your best bet would be to check with a veterinarian. Poor guy. To bad you could not squeeze him into your carry on hand bag....he is so little...maybe check your airline too. Good luck. BV

How can I remove grease from cargo pants?

my uncle got his car serviced and there was grease/oil on the doors (transparent). Some of it got on to my cargo pants and now I dont know how to get rid of it, will ordinary detergent work? How can I remove grease from cargo pants?
I use a liquid dish soap, such as Dawn. It is a great degreaser. Rub it into the stain 20 minutes before you wash it. As others have mentioned, drying it can set the stain, so hang dry or use a no heat dry setting so you can make sure the stain is out.How can I remove grease from cargo pants?
Apply dawn dishwashing detergent to the spot, and rub the spot with it. Then throw your pants in the washing machine. This should take care of it.
Put some Dawn dish liquid on the stain...
get some mechanics hand cleaner. Fast Orange, or GoJo. Without Pumice. Your Uncle probably has some. Should do the trick. Any of the stain removers, OxyClean or Shout they work well too. BUT, after you wash them inspect the stain before you dry them!!!!!!!!!!!! Heat sets stains. If they're not clean, repeat!!
GoJo got my stain out, but it also took some of the color off. Since there work pants i didn't mind any way.
Bleach. Scrub the grease out hard.
If you use just ordinary detergent, it will only take away the greasiness, but leave a slightly dark spot. I would suggest pre-treating the stain with some 'Goo Gone.' It's in almost every hardward, drug and grocery store, clear bottle with a black cap, and yellow liquid. I use if for all kinds of problem stains and things that are hard to remove. Good stuff!
You can use Liquid Dish soap %26gt;%26gt;%26gt; DAWN %26lt;%26lt;%26lt; is a good one. Liquid Tide is also good. Rub it in good and work it around to help break it loose. After you wash it...check the area BEFORE you place in dryer. the dryer sets in a lot of these stains. If it doesn't come out during those first attempts....try spraying it with WD-40...it actually made of fish oil...which washes out easier than machine oils. The WD40 helps break down the heavier oil and make it easier to get out. Once you have soaked the area good with the WD40...repeat the earlier steps with liquid soaps.

How are suitcases secured in airliner cargo holds?

I've never seen the inside of the baggage storage area, so I wonder--do they just throw the bags in haphazardly, do they have shelves, slots, straps, etc.? Do they pile bags on top of other bags? Is a person inside manually placing the bags in place? Do they have a conveyor inside the plane? Etc.How are suitcases secured in airliner cargo holds?
Some older aircraft had a shelf system that we could stack bags on and then electronically move that row back, opening up another shelf. They aren't always reliable. Larger airplanes that have long cargo bins sometimes have a belt system in the floor. Luggage is stacked on its side up to the two inch minimum space/gap required for the fire control systems in the ceiling. Depending on the cargo bin size, 1-2 people work ( on their knees ) stacking the baggage/cargo tightly to minimize movement but without damaging the items. Once the bin is full or all items that need to be loaded, have been, cargo nets are put into place ( attaching floor to ceiling at the bin door ) to keep items from moving. Widebody airplanes have container systems that we preload on the ground and then machines lift them up to the airplane door and load them inside. Floor locks are used to hold them in place. Everything is loaded with the airplanes weight and balance in mind. Can't make it too heavy to fly or too heavy one way or the other to where it won't fly level without alot of adjustments by the pilots, burning alot more fuel. Regardless of the airplane type, it still takes people to manually load them up.How are suitcases secured in airliner cargo holds?

How close would something like a cargo container have to be to a plane's engine to be sucked in?

In light of the incident that occured, where a cargo/ luggage container was sucked into the engine of a Japanese airliner, I was wondering, how close would that container have to be for this to occur. And if you know, what is the standard distance that it *should* have been to avoid something like this?

Thankyou for your time and answers. How close would something like a cargo container have to be to a plane's engine to be sucked in?
If you look on the ground at gate areas, you'll see semicircular markings on the ground that are about a 10 ft radius. Those are intended to keep stuff from getting sucked into the engine, and would be acceptable at lower power settings. How close would something like a cargo container have to be to a plane's engine to be sucked in?
Jimmbbo answered your question, no need to see it answered 10-12 more times.

    What causes stuff like that is basic stupidity. I see incidents like this way too frequently, even on something so simple as lowering flaps. There are warnings in the job guide... ';Ensure area is clear of all obstacles before lowering flaps';

Then, Airman Bag-o-donuts comes in or calls on the radio, ';We've got a damaged flap.'; This is stuff taught very early on, and it shouldn't be an issue. People will find other stuff to blame it on, like being in a hurry, task saturation, etc, but it is plain stupidity to me. Ignorance can only come into play when the person isn't aware of the issues.
It shouldn't have been anywhere near the aircraft during the start procedure.. They haven't said exactly what happened, but to me -when I turn the red beacon on, it means...get yourself, others, or anything out of the way!

Reinform is right. Why in the world consider doing this? There has to be a safer solution to your project. Even if this isn't illegal, it should be. A battery is heavy. Aside from spilling electrolyte, if it broke loose in an accident, it would cause a lot of damage to anything that it struck. In cases like this, follow your common sense. Mine tells me that this is too unsafe to be practical.
There's not been any legislation prohibiting what you suggest. The only libility you would encounter would arise if you had an accident and the batteries spilt acid, on property, on people. Also, if you live in a forest fire prone area , or your vehicle is parked near a house fire, the hydrogen.....need I say more?

What is the chance of a dog dying on an airplane in the cargo area?

I have a 5 pound dog. I can't swith airlines and they only allow her to be in the cargo area with all the other dogs. The flight is about 9-10 hours. What kind of care will they provide for her? Does she have a big chance of dying? What is the chance of a dog dying on an airplane in the cargo area?
Not a big chance, dogs are flown in cargo all the time, but a small chance. There are companies that drive pets cross country, try googling them. What is the chance of a dog dying on an airplane in the cargo area?
Buy your dog a seat. Don't take the chance. Do you really trust busy baggage handlers to be gentle, give your dog water, or even treat the kennel like there's a living animal in there. I wouldn't.
She'll be fine...just make sure she has plenty to drink before the flight and only give her a tiny amount of food...so she won't feel a pressing need to crap. Have a wonderful time!
American Airlines allows only two dogs in the cargo area and the area is the same pressure as the passenger cabins.

I would never fly an airline that didn't allow me to have my 15 lb dogs in the seat next to me or in a carrier under the seat in front of me. I don't do cargo holds and neither should you, unless the airline allows you to check on your dog as often as you like.

You can switch airlines. Do it. 9-10 hours? Your dog is small enough to use a seat next to you, some airlines charge as little as $50 for a pet seat.
Read this and then do whatever you can to take the dog onboard with you.

The Air Transport Association estimates that 500,000 pets are transported by air each year. Prior to the passing of the Safe Air Travel for Animals Act, the Air Transport Association calculated that approximately 5,000 of these were killed, injured or lost.

    ----------------------

A new law was passed in 2005, but I personally would not trust the new statistics

    -----------------------------

e latest statistics, released in February 2007, reported that there was one death, two injuries and four losses on U.S. flights during December 2006 (monthly statistics are reported at

If your pet must travel in the cargo hold, there are several things you can do to increase the chances of a safer flight:

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends against tranquilizing pets traveling by air. The medication disrupts their balance and dulls their reflexes, and can cause respiratory and cardiovascular problems at high altitudes.

Use direct flights. You will avoid the mistakes that occur during airline transfers, and possible delays in getting your pet off the plane.

Check in at least two hours before departure time, and ensure that all the paperwork, such as any certification required by the airline, is in order.

Always travel on the same flight as your pet. Ask the airline if you can watch your pet being loaded into the cargo hold.

When you board the plane, notify the captain and flight attendant that your pet is in the hold, so they can take precautions. And don鈥檛 be shy about asking the crew to check on the status of your pet.

If traveling during the summer, take early morning, late afternoon or evening flights.

In winter, fly during the afternoon when temperatures are warmer.

Try not to fly during busy times, such as weekends, holidays and summer.

Don鈥檛 feed your pet for at least four hours before your trip. Give small amounts of water, and put ice cubes in the water tray inside the carrier.

Exercise your pet before the flight to help him relax and sleep.

Fit your pet with a collar that can鈥檛 get caught on the kennel door. Make sure the ID tag lists all of your pet鈥檚 information, the address to which you鈥檙e traveling and a contact person.

In addition, have your pet microchipped.

Your pet鈥檚 carrier should be sturdy, labeled with all of the pet鈥檚 information, including flight number and destination, and marked distinctively for easy identification.

Carry a current photograph of your pet.

When you arrive at your destination check your pet. If anything seems wrong, contact a veterinarian immediately.

The new casualty reporting requirements mean that air travelers now have a chance to ascertain which airlines have the best safety record, and to choose accordingly. On the other hand, there is a fear that more airlines may follow the example of Southwest, and refuse to carry pets at all.
I have never had a problem. I fly all the time.

They don't allow snub-nosed dogs like pugs, boxers, english bull dogs, and so on.
I cannot answer how she will be treated or what the chance of death to her would be but I can share with you the fact that many years ago I had a toy poodle that was 5 months old and she was flown cargo from Ohio to Pennsylvania and that dog was the most nervous mean dog I have ever been around. Many people have told me it was because she had been traumatized from being in a dark area with so much noise during that flight.

How do these relatively small pirate vessels sneak up and capture large cargo ships?

Why don't the ship owners hire security forces to deal with such situations? How do these relatively small pirate vessels sneak up and capture large cargo ships?
Small boats/dinghys - hard to see/do not show on radar

No real lookout on the cargo ships.

No security forces because of the cost, insurance pays if hijacked for ransom, some ports will not allow ships in port with weapons/armed personnel on board, etc.How do these relatively small pirate vessels sneak up and capture large cargo ships?
They just bombard a ship with NO fire power with their own fire power until they can basically throw a hook and rope up onto the deck and climb up.

I agree... these sailors need to start taking training courses on how to use weapons.

Also... don't be surprised if companies start to hire security forces to protect their investments. (Can you say... Black Water?)
depends, think its being done at nite.they don't have large crews on theses ships. also, i think they are a tad bit naive. maybe they these thing only happen to the next guy.not me. however, they (the pirates) are traveling in small boats which are hard for radars to pick up. and theses pirates are just that brazen. who would have ever thought that would actually be getting away with this.by the way, did you see the navy get busy today? lets see how many pirates show up tomorrow?
Because they are trained for that only ....... their job is to sneak and attack, not making a warm welcome ....... lol ........ :)

Cargo ships cant b given ammunition, coz if not with the pirates if there is a mutiny btwn the crew itself, they may use these weapons in bad way ....... so there are regulations ........ to control it ....... but still it happens coz .......

always there is a loop hole in every bucket ....... lol ....... :P
Security outfits cost megabucks. The pirates are in a win situation. They don't care. They have plenty of labour available. . They don't have any respect or fear . They get fear when they are shot but when they are there are more out there to take a chance f
Pirates are usually heavily armed, and these cargo ships do not have any weapons, because of costs, and if they did they would have to stop at every port for inspections.
The pirates have weapons, and the crews don`t. A rocket propelled grenade can cause havoc to a ship. Most of the ships won`t arm the crews because they are afraid of mutiny.

How safe/advisable is it for my son's 10 yr old dog (lovely Golden Retreiver) to be flown in cargo hold on a two and a half hour flight from Holland to Spain? Fortunately, it will only be one way as the dog (Benson) is coming to live with us permanently in Spain. He hasn't flown before and I am concerned about the age factor. He is calm natured and normally travels well by car and ferry but this could be an ordeal for him. Would welcome any advice on offer. How safe/advisable is it for dog to be flown in cargo hold of plane?
    It is quite safe.

Most airline deaths regarding animals are due to escape of the animal during transport OR overheating on the tarmac.

Use common sense regarding the overheating issue.

Escape: I did a LOT of research about this when the very first vision I had of a dog that had been shipped to me was seeing her run across a parking lot as I pulled into the cargo terminal... it was an 8 mile run to catch her and she developed a fear of men due to people chasing her. A friend of mine's dog died when the door of his crate broke open and the frightened dog crawled into a spot in the cargo hold with no oxygen.

This is what I was told by a Northwest Airlines Cargo agent:

The best way to prevent escape of a dog during transport is through use of an airline approved crate with a few modifications: To prevent the door from being pulled in or pushed out you will need to drill a small hole on both the top and bottom lips of the crate an inch or two away from where the peg slides in to hold the door closed. When you are ready to ship the dog you simply close and latch the door as usual and then run zip ties through the 2 drilled holes and the door grate. Make sure all connectors on the crate are secure. How safe/advisable is it for dog to be flown in cargo hold of plane?
I would get bloodwork done first to make sure things are functioning well. Plus I beleive that most airlines ';highly'; recommend it , if not require it. He should be fine on the 2 hours flight but get bloodwrok to be extra cautious. good luck
Check with your vet to see if they have a mild sedative that would last the duration of the flight. I know my dog would go nuts if we tried to fly with her and that is the step that we would take.
I don't know how European airline companies are about it, but I know most American airline companies DO NOT allow animals who have been sedated in any form. A flight is a very scary thing for an animal in the cargo area. Not only are they in a cage/crate for hours alone, but there may be luggage sliding and banging in mild turbulance, there may be other animals who are disturbing and frightening your dog, as well as other factors. Also consider that flying a pet in the cargo area is very expensive, almost the price of a human in a real seat.

Is there not a train that would allow you (or someone) to travel with the dog? I know it's a long trip, but for a dog that's not a pup and not small enough to be in the passenger area, it's really what I'd try to do.
I would VERY highly recommend you do NOT do this. It can freak dogs out, and it's not safe. You cannot give them something to make them sleep. Especially considering how old he is.
There is some risk, but it is done all the time- our last three dogs were flown cross country from the breeder to us, flight time was between 8 and 10 hours. If he is used to being crated he should be ok, assuming his health is good. If he is not used to a crate, it may be a bit freaky for him. We always try to schedule night flights, as the trip has been quite long in our case, and we live in South Florida, so we worry about the hot temperature in the cargo hold once the plane lands.

How do I clean black stains from the sides of a cargo trailer?

It appears that while sitting outside for a long period, my custom-painted trailer now has ugly black water-streaks coming down the sides of all panels. Simple Green/Purple Power/Car Wax all have little effect unless massive muscle-power is used per tiny area. Who is accountable for cargo, the freight forwarder or the transport carrier?

who is accountable for cargo, the freight forwarder or the transport carrier?Who is accountable for cargo, the freight forwarder or the transport carrier?
I believe it would be the freight fowarderWho is accountable for cargo, the freight forwarder or the transport carrier?
The carrier. The freight forwarder never actually takes possession of the cargo. The carrier is the one who picks it up and delivers it.
This is a good question. Actually both. Both parties have to be insured against cargo loss. Now, the question comes down to when the freight was damaged, and what caused the damage to the freight/equipment. If the damage was a result from the supplier's faulty packaging (broken pallet), then the responiblity remains with them. If the ground handler drops the pallet, it goes on their insurance, if the air carrier doesnt strap it down, then it is on them, if the truck drivers rolls over, on them. All carriers in the cargo business are required that the carry cargo insurance, usually for the amount of at least 1 million dollars, depending on size of the operations. The freight forwarder is responsible also if they did not take the steps neccessary to properly move this freight, or the required documents for customs or air travel, if that is their responsiblity, such as they did not prepare the correct ppwk for international freight and cargo is siezed by customs, and the carrier gets fined, which is then passed to the freight forwarder. This is why paperwork and proof of delivery are critical for cargo transport, as it shows ownership and who has responsibity of the freight. Once a company signs for freight, they take full responsiblity of that until signed for by someone else.
The carrier bears ultimate responsibility....which is why we must re-qualify every year in dangerous goods handling...(pain-in-the- ****)

What volume of air is needed to float 800 lbs of cargo above water?

Im building a pontoon/catamaran %26amp; i need to know how much air needs to be contained under the boat.

Also, are there any simple equations to figure this out? What volume of air is needed to float 800 lbs of cargo above water?
    800 lb = 363 kg of mass

density of water is 998 kg/m鲁

    363 kg / 998 kg/m鲁 = 0.364 m鲁

so a volume of 0.364 m鲁 of water will support 363 kg of load. For an accurate number, we have to subtract the weight of the same volume of air.

    Density of Air 1.28 kg/m鲁

    1.28 kg/m鲁 x 0.364 m鲁 = 0.46 kg, too small to matter.

Answer is 0.364 m鲁 or 12.9 ft鲁

No airline allows dogs to travel in the cabin. They all have to go in the hold.

I really like the new ZOUT in the red bottle, it guarantees it will remove grease stains which are about the hardest thing to get out of garment fibers of all sorts. You can hit them with the Zout, leave it a few minutes, and put it in a soaker load with your regular detergent and some Biz Activated Non-Chlorine Bleach. The Biz is actually stain activated and usually gets out even mystery stains that you don't know the source of. Use only cold water and check it now and again to make sure that the sauce is completely gone, once it is you will know that the grease will be too.How can I get rid of food greese on my cargo shorts?
apply some pine sol directly to the stain and about a quarter cup to the whole load with your regular laundry soap. Launder as usual.
grease spots can usually be removed by washing with hot water and soap. However, if the stain is persistent, make up a solution of 1 Tbsp. salt to 4 Tbsp. rubbing alcohol and sponge this onto the stain, then wash in the hottest water safe for the fabric. If the stain is still there, make sure you do not put the fabric in the dryer - use a dry-cleaning solvent on the stain and then re-wash. For delicate fabrics, such as silk, it is best to consult professional dry-cleaners.
get dishwashing soap...no not the one for the dishwasher cuz it has bleach in it...but a good grease fighting dishwashing liquid...then get hot hot wather ...pout the soap directly on the stain...then with hot hot water soak it ...so it will be hot and soapy...see it melts the grease..oh lord it worked many times for me. i have a lil boy and a hubby that gets stuff like this on their clothes alot!! especially my boy...well when his daddy likes his beers he likes his hot wings too...and when u had 1 too many of em...u get stains like this...lol but i am the stain master big time!..lol
I would use a bit of spray n' wash ultra, allow a few minutes to soak, and wash them as normal with the hottest water safe for the fabric...

What are some cargo items that are transported by train?

Okay so I am writing a 5 page paper, and it would help if I could provide and example of items that are transported by train, other than humans. I need a link that tells me so I can add it to my bibliography. What are some cargo items that are transported by train?
    Coal, Logs, Food..

    Basically everything.

Google: Train Cargo itemsWhat are some cargo items that are transported by train?
Think of everything you use, buy, eat etc. and that is basically what is transported by rail.

It is the most economical way to transport goods around the country.

i.e one grain train will take the place of about 430 semi's, a coal train about 600 and a train transporting vehicles about 72 car transporters.
In Australia - Coal from La Trobe Valey for local electricity generation.

Wheat from western Victoria for export.

Iron Ore from Western Australia for local %26amp; export use.

Sugar Cane in Queensland for local %26amp; export use.
Illegal immigrants, Chinese imports, food, drink and fags.
Here's the deal - a truck can go faster than a train because it can go from one place to another directly, without having to stop at rail yards and switch trains before arriving at the customer. However, trucks are smaller than trains, and since each truck needs a driver but a train car can carry hundreds of truck's worth of stuff with just one driver, personnel costs are higher with trucks. Truckers don't have to pay for the road (except for tolls), but railway is cheaper to build than roads, so the cost difference is minimal.

So, basically, if you need a little bit of something and you need it fast, like lettuce to a store, use a truck. If you need a lot of something and speed isn't that big of an issue, then use trains. Trucks will carry produce that will spoil quickly, like lettuce, refrigerated meat, or other things like that, and trains carry the potatoes and frozen food to warehouses, and trucks go from there to the stores and restaurants. Huge amounts of sand, grain, coal, and other bulk products go by train because it would take too many trucks to carry it all. Another thing you will see on trains these days is trash - containers of garbage, boxcars of used paper or plastic to be recycled, gondola cars full of scrap steel and crushed cars - all bulk cargo that is not in any hurry to get where it's going.

Usually, trucks will carry containers from ships, but if there are direct rail lines at the port, the train will carry a huge amount of containers from the port, and stop at 4 or 5 points across the nation to unload and let trucks take the cargo the rest of the way to the customer.

If you are shipping enourmous amounts of stuff, like grain from several farms or ores from a mine, you will use barges on a river. Very slow, but very cheap and can haul a LOT.

So, just take this answer and add 4 more pages, and you're done.
    WHY NOT SEARCH IT YOURSELF?

There's a bunch of items that are transported by train, I doubt that you can't even think of a whole list.
Bulk items like coal, stone, oil, chemicals, timber, steel (rolled, girders, etc.), also containers.

Also engineering materials for maintenance of the railway itself e.g. rails, ballast, sleepers, points and signalling equipment, catenary (support structure for overhead wires), etc.

Also parcels, vehicle parts, military equipment, etc.

Some links below to UK rail freight operating companies:
Almost anything can be shipped by train, as shown by the wide variety of rail car types. It is most economical to ship rail bulk items in large quantity, such as coal, chemicals, lumber, grain, etc. Often times, smaller quantities with extended delivery schedule can also be loaded on a truck trailer, which is then put on the rail for transport and then delivered by truck.

There are many things transported by rail. Many industrial items such as cars, lumber and oil arrive at their destination by train. everything that is in your house comes by rail or is shipped by rail one way or the other
The general rule of thumb for a class 1 railroad. If it will fit on a rail car platform for inside a box car they can haul it. From coal, cars and trucks, grain, consumer goods, they even have rail cars that will haul a fully loaded 18 wheeler trailer full of good. They have standard cars and specialty cars. I watch every Sunday as parts of airplanes come through he yards on special cars. Have a look at the links i have provided. There is some great information listed about each of the class 1 railroads.
The spent nuclear waste from nuclear reactors is shipped on rails to different locations in Nevada and Utah.

Is the luggage/cargo compartment pressurized on ALL planes or just commericial passenger airplanes?

I had some old wine shipped by air, and they arrived with corks sticking out on several different occasions. Sometimes, there would also be a small amount of wine which seeped out of the bottle. I have inspected the corks and they are not rotten or faulty.

I believe this is the result of the pressure inside the bottle being substantially higher than the pressure outside, and this pressure forces the cork out along with some wine (if the package was on its side). Once the bottles are on the ground (where the pressure inside the bottle is the same as the outside) the wine no longer seeps out, even if I violently shake the bottle.

But in movies (like ';Transformer'; and ';Air Force One';) we see people walking around the luggage compartment of commerical passenger planes, implying that they are pressurized like the cabin.

My wine seeps and exhibits a protruding cork ONLY when shipped by air. I've never had this problem with bottles with Ground shipping.

Thanks for everyone's help!Is the luggage/cargo compartment pressurized on ALL planes or just commericial passenger airplanes?
Not ALL luggage compartments are pressurized, but even those that are pressurized only maintain pressure equivalent to about 8000 feet above sea level. Depending on where your wine is bottled, this could be enough pressure differential to push out some corks.

Perhaps you should look into a stronger seal for those bottles that will be shipped by air.Is the luggage/cargo compartment pressurized on ALL planes or just commericial passenger airplanes?
It's not that the airplanes are unpressurized, it's that the pressure changes in them during flight. Generally, if you flew from say, Florida to Kentucky, the bottles would start out at sea-level pressure inside and outside the bottles. When the plane climbs, the cabin pressure can reach up to 8,000', meaning the pressure inside the bottle is higher than the plane. This would force the corks out. When it lands, the pressure would be like 2,000' elevation, and there would still be pressure on the cork.

This problem is not limited to airplanes. If you took a bottle of win in the car from death valley to the top of the rockies, you would have the same problem.
that's one reason champagne makers wire the cork on..

What are the procedures of taking humain remains as cargo on a plane?

and where do they locate them?

thanksWhat are the procedures of taking humain remains as cargo on a plane?
You will have to have a Death Certificate to prove idenity, paperwork that is completed by the funeral home that the body has been prepared and embalmed, and is safe. You will also have to have to buy cargo space, set up agents to handle and transport the casket at each location, and if flying internationally, have to have an agent to handle all of the customs/duties/import and export ppwk for the casket with the body. It is easliy done, when the people doing the logistics know what they are doing, and who to ship caskets. Many funeral homes, especially in Muslim areas, offer shipping of caskets to the middle east for burial, and handle all of the transportation. The caskets are usually flown on all cargo aircraft, but and some larger commerical aircraft that sell cargo space for international flights. They are loaded and straped in the cargo areas on commerical pax planes, and for cargo a/c, are built up on ';cookie Sheets'; with netting and other freight and then the sheets are locked into the a/c .

Unless the body was that of a fallen soldier that was killed in combat. The US Miltary after a backlash from familes, now charter private aircraft to fly the casket back to the us, and then from their are delivered on private charters with unifomed soldiers to handle/offload the casket with respect to the familes that they are giving them too. What are the procedures of taking humain remains as cargo on a plane?
    http://cebupacificair.com/products/faqs-鈥?/a>
You have to pay cargo charges, which are different from the charge for a ticket. Usually, a funeral home will be happy to make the arrangements for you, and they will roll the cost of transporting the remains into the price for their services.

Caskets travel in the belly of the plane, in the cargo hold. The regular luggage is kept in areas with netting to keep it in place, but caskets are a lot bigger than suitcases, so they are strapped down to keep them from moving around during the flight.

I hope that helps you with your questions.
Human remains are transported as cargo. Coffins are carried in the bulk cargo area at the very back, which has its own door (on the left) for loading oversize or non containerized items.
You have to check with each airline, each has its own rules. The remains travel in a coffin in the baggage/cargo area. There are different rules for ashes.

  • Will a sea cargo container withstand being buried in the dirt for a cheap tornado shelter?

I want to bury a cargo container to be used as a tornado shelter. I live in tornado alley, and it would be cheaper and provide more room than a conventional shelter. I don't want to bury it and then find out that it will not with stand the load of dirt on the sides and top. thanksWill a sea cargo container withstand being buried in the dirt for a cheap tornado shelter?
I was considering coupling two of these together, the longer ones I think are about 40', as a getaway. They are being touted as cheap and effective housing for those who lose their homes (huts, really) during tsunamis, cyclones, etc., in the Pacific. I recall a 40' weighing somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,000 or so pounds, and cost is between 4 and 6K not counting delivery, which has to be by roll off unless you have a very large crane to put it where you want.

It would be very effective as a tornado shelter, but due to the doors, you would have to bury into a hill unless you planned to cut through the ceiling for access and bury it to the roof. In addition, you will have to do some modifications to the door mechanism, as they are meant to very strongly shut from the outside.

Yahoo or google ';ocean going shipping containers'; and you will get more of an idea about them. I recall they were in three lengths, a bit over 8' high and 8' wide interior. Of course, smaller ones, 20', weigh less and perhaps cost less. You are seeing them more and more behind hardware stores, pharmacies, etc., as you drive around medium to larger towns. They use them for storage since they are so secure, especially with a case hardened lock.

You would also need to assure at least a bit of ventilation capability, just in case you had to use it and it got covered by something heavy, and tell all your neighbors where to look if a tornado happens to wander by and you aren't located soon after. I heard of a vent being cut by torch high on a door, then hinged and a tight fitting door mounted inside with a slide lock, as a suggestion for what you want to do. I would not worry about pressure of dirt from sides, but would, as suggested by another, bury it no higher than the roof level (I would vent at top and leave about a foot or so protruding above ground level. Even the roof will withstand a tremendous amount of weight, but the deeper it is the harder it is to access.

Finally, I recently saw a school bus body buried as a tornado shelter, but it was on one of those redneck messages you see from time to time making fun of someone's innovation-without-care-how-others see it.Will a sea cargo container withstand being buried in the dirt for a cheap tornado shelter?
They are being used all the time in Iraq as bomb shelters. There, they get reinforced to take extra load of sandbags on the roof, but for a tornado shelter that shouldn't be necessary
I used to work in the containter industry and those things will take a beating and still look pretty good. I think it might work. I've seen people that lived in them, and they had no complaints, and they weren't homeless.
I think it is plenty strong enough, but would recommend using automotive undercoating as a rust inhibitor on the exterior.
A very enterprising collective is using these containers for housing. Check out their Web site. This link is to the FAQs page, but also check out the home page and the descriptions and links there.

    http://www.sgblocks.com/faqs.html
    I think it would work.

It doesn't have to be completely buried.

Just so its top is leval with the ground
Since they stack those on ships, they are built to withstand a lot more pressure than burying them underground, especially considering the forces encountered in rough seas. You have a great idea there, and I'll go you one better, all you have to do is ANCHOR that thing, it's already tornado proof.

Working on a cargo ship to get to Europe? How do you start trying?

You would need to find the name of the shipping company and find out if they are hiring deck hands. Most carriers are foreign owners now and they hire crews in their home base country. (Hanjin and Hyundai are Korean owned, they hire crews that are based and live in Korea. CNA, K-line, COSCO, Yang Min, Maersk are similar - hire home country based crews, not U.S. citizens)

Keep in mind there is a training process, in the home country, to show someone how everything on board works. The vessels are very expensive, the crews are only 7 - 8 people on board so they are very small crews. The one way voyage takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 4 weeks depending on how many ports they have to stop and load and unload at and where the home base is.

Ship crews may be labor union based so you would have to join the labor union of the country for the shipping line you are trying to get hired on with.

bird flu?How come cargo ships don't have there own security or carry weapons to protect themselves?
    Two reasons.

First, when you enter a seaport you are subject to the laws of the country where you are docked. Not every country will allow for armed security on ships, you really can be denied entry to the port-it's the law.

Second, it's bad for business. Those cargo ships don't own that cargo. It's like a giant taxi. Would you ride in a taxi that has a reputation for bloody shoot-outs? No, taxi drivers like to have a clean taxi and a cleaner reputation.

If your cargo ships keep getting into bloody shoot-outs, I'd stop shipping my cargo on your ship, you might dump my cargo in the ocean to save your own skin. That's good for you, but it cost me millions in lost cargo. I'll call another taxi.

How to keep a cat warm in the cargo hold of an airplane?

I am forced to fly my cat in the cargo hold of an airplane for 7 hours in December. I know it's early, but I am really worried about him being cold. I've heard stories of cats freezing to death or otherwise dying in airplanes. I CANNOT take him in the cabin with me, he has to go in the cargo hold, across Canada, in the beginning of winter (around Dec 17.) If anyone has any advice on what I could do to try and make sure he doesn't freeze I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot.How to keep a cat warm in the cargo hold of an airplane?
When I moved from the UK to Cyprus and took my 17 year old cat with me, she had to travel in the hold because UK regulations don't allow pets (except for guide dogs) to travel in the cabin. My vet explained to me that pets travel in a specially prepared area of the cargo hold away from the luggage area. It is pressurised and heated to between 50 and 70 degrees F. It is kept dark to help the animals to sleep and to decrease stress. My vet also recommended against the use of any kind of sedative. It can make them disorientated and unable to steady themselves in their carrier if there is any air-turbulence during the flight. Sedation lowers blood pressure and altitude can exacerbate this effect. Many airlines will refuse to allow pets to board if they are known to have been sedated. Another of my worries was that her travel box would be loaded onto the luggage carousel upon arrival in Cyprus, but this fear was unfounded. She was taken straight to the animal clearance centre for a quick health check and to ensure that all her paperwork was in order for her to enter the country. My cat was fine after the 5 hour flight and suffered no ill effects whatsoever.

I would suggest that you contact several airlines to enquire about their policy for transporting pets in the hold. You may need to check in advance with the airline which of the planes in their fleet have a special area in the hold for pets and then book a flight on that specific plane.

This link will allow you to check the individual policy of airlines for transporting pets.

Choose a travel box that is large enough for your cat to stand up and turn around in. Line it with several inches of shredded paper. Not only will this help your cat to retain their body temperature, but if they have an accident during the flight, it will absorb any liquids. (Blankets or towels tend to draw heat away from the cat's body).

Lots of blankets, and maybe some of those heating pad people put on their backs, or other body parts. They are one time use and some of the off brands last up to 12 hours. The brand I use, Body Heat, is really good because it lasts a long time, and it doesn't get so hot it will burn. You will want to cover most of the airholes, especially the door, with a breathable material so not much air gets through. You may also want to think about putting an emergency blanket (used mostly for camping, it's a thin, silver sheet that looks like foil) on the inside roof and floor of the cage. You may also want to call the airline and see what they suggest.
Why can't you take him in a cat carrier and carry him on with you and put it under the seat? My friend just flew to Germany with her cat that way and did just fine. The cat needed innoculations and the vet gave her a sedative for the trip. Check into that. I wouldn't put my cat in the cargo area for anything.
    Violet has it right.

Those things are called ';Snuggle safe'; They are obtainable for about $20 buck at Petsmart or online. They stay warm for about 8 hrs. they come with a soft cover and can be placed inside to keep kitty warm enough. Be careful to ship in a large enough crate so she can get away from warm or cold.
They put animals in the pressurized and heated portion of the cargo hold. It isn't allowed to get to freezing. The biggest problem will be waiting to board the plane where it could get pretty cold. The idea of making a little sleeping bag is a good one.
Put one of those thermal sleeping bags in the cage with him. He'll cuddle inside of it during the trip. The sleeping bag is better than blankets because it will provide more warm but be much lighter.
Well you can put thick blankets in the carrier to make him warm but just don't cram him in it
Put a towel inside so he can keep warm. Just dont put alot or it will get crammed.
yeah blankets.... my dog did fine and he's flown many a time from colorado to alaska
    um...hello?! ever heard of blankets?!!
Why can't he travel in the cabin? If the airline doesn't allow it - choose another. If there's already pets in the cabin that flight and they won't allow more - book it at another time or another day. I did fly with my cats in cargo when I moved from Florida to Seattle but it was only because I had my ferrets in the cabin. Otherwise I would have had them in there. And it was also in late Spring so quite warm in all areas we flew through.

I would NOT chance putting a cat in the dead of winter up in Canada. Has the airline told you where the cat will be is temperature controlled or not? Generally it is and cats dying on planes from the cold generally do so because they've been left too long on the runway outside of the plane. But even if it is temperature controlled there's the risk of that malfunctioning or the air supply to the cargo hold accidentally being closed off. Do you really want to take that risk?

sux_2be - please explain how you expect a thermal sleeping bag to fit inside a cat carrier!
    I would be worried too.

You can get these little disk things that you can heat up in the microwave and use to keep kitty beds warm. My friend does this for her outside cats in the winter. She says they last all night. They are made specifically for pets for this reason

You could get one of these, heat it before you go to the airport, wrap it in a pillowcase and then put a fuzzy micro fleece blanket (the size of a throw, or twin bed size perhaps cut in half depending on how big his traveling crate is) over it. The fleece blanket will also help him stay warm and comfy because it is soft and he can snuggle into it. Get a traveling crate that is mostly enclosed with just some air holes so as to prevent the loss of heat. I'm sure in the cargo hold in Dec there will be no chance that he will overheat.

If you are interested in those disk things, email me and I'll get the name from my friend and where she bought them.

    Good luck.
