How big is the cargo area of a plane? The part they put the luggage?

I was reading the story about the coffin they put in the bagage area under the plane and someone said it was inpossable that there is not enough room their to hold a coffin? How big is the cargo area of a plane? The part they put the luggage?
[EDIT: I have been corrected via email.. I was using the Industry term ';Folding';.. When I should have spelled it out.. They cut it half (or 3rds if it's a 727) with a Chainsaw.. I just thought ';Folding'; Was more polite.]

Little know fact.. You have to fold a coffin in half before it can fit on a plane..

Perhaps, by specifying what kind of plane it is would help us answer your question.. They range from 2' square to large enough to fit 4 M1 tanks inside.

Coffins are carried on aircraft quite frequently. Larger aircraft such as a 747, 777,767,757 will carry in-excess of 200,000 pounds of cargo, in addition, to the bags of the passengers. In fact, airlines tend to make more money carrying cargo rather than passengers. Especially from Japan to USA and vice-versa.

If I were to give you a number I would say the typical passenger configured 747 has approximately 2500-3000 sq. ft. of cargo space and usually the aircraft will have 2-3 cargo bays.

The typical 767/757 would have 2 cargo bays with about 1700-2500 sq. ft. of space.

The 737 would have 2 cargo bays with approximately 1200-1900 sq. ft. of space.
We ship caskets on planes every single day. The cargo area is more than large enough to accomodate. I had 3 bodes shipped from Florida on the same plane once.
It would probably depend on the plane, but assuming it's a commercial jet liner, like a 757/767 there is enough room for the baggage handlers to walk around in the hold. A coffin isn't much larger than a person laying down, which is about the same as 4 to 5 medium size suite cases. How many suite cases can you put on a twin bed? So logic would say that there is more than enough room for several coffins in the hold of commercial jet.
Who ever told you that is right. Mostly they only let you take one or two big bags onboard with you because the place were you put your belongings is so small. They usually take your luggage and put it somewhere else on the plane then afterwards they will return your luggage back to you after the flight. It does depend on the plane some planes can hold alot overhead some can't if you have a privet jet/plane then that would not be a problem depending on the size. I do hope this helps you
