How would the life of a sailor on a cruise ship differ to one on a tanker or cargo vessel?

I refer specifically to deck officers. Thanks. Also, how are officers in the Merchant Navy ranked- what are the junior titles for say a cadet (E.g., would it be 'Cadet Jones') or an officer just a little higher up the food chain?

Thanks again! How would the life of a sailor on a cruise ship differ to one on a tanker or cargo vessel?
Don't do it! Figure less than half the pay as on a tanker/box boat. The ';cargo'; is always whining about something instead of contentedly sitting in the stacking frames or tanks. You must be in your whites at all times. The crew turnover is fantastic (horrible?). Count on training taking up most of your time. On the bridge there is always a third mate to answer phone calls (if the hotel director gives out the bridge number it's ';I need more ice and a corkscrew'; type of calls) and alarms of various sorts. The second, first or chief does the actual navigation. There are TWO captains you have to deal with- real captain and staff captain who thinks he deserves to be the real captain. You also have to deal with all the extra officers in the officer/staff mess. If your a third, you have to put up with the hotel officer- deck 9 or second laundry officer thinking he outranks you. Stick with the real ships- I'll never return after my gig is up here. How would the life of a sailor on a cruise ship differ to one on a tanker or cargo vessel?
cruise ships have tons of women. really doubtful on a tanker or cargo ship.
officer higher up the food chain and plenty of sex on cruise ship not on tanker
I used to be a deck officer 2nd Mate, for P/O lines, and have sailed on Tankers and Cargo ships. On a cruise ship there is a lot more regulations (Bullshit) because you are dealing with paying guests, where as Tankers and cargo ships are a lot more relaxed. As for ranks MN, start from Cadet to 3rd / 2nd / 1st Mates then on to Captain Deck Side. However on a cruise SHIP THERE ARE A LOT MORE PERKS apart from you spend more time in your Uniform, a lot more washing of white shirts. As for me I loved it. hope this helps with your question, good luck.
When one is on a Tanker/cargo vessel, One MUST sleep with 1 Eye OPEN ! {;~D

Kinda like a maritime Bareback Mountain.
the smell is different
The life of the sailors isn't that much different. The engineers and officers all do pretty much the same job, on a cruise ship though obviously you have a lot more staff, bar staff, cleaners, etc. Even on the largest tankers you would only find 15 - 20 crew members. there are differences in the jobs though, on cargo ship for example theres the cargo to worry about, by that i mean that the cargo may have to be kept at a certain temperature so the crew have to be responsible for maintaining that.
The work required for the deck officers on the cruise ship is much the same as that required on the cargo vessel. That of the safe navigation and operation of the ship. The cruise ship is a floating resort engaged in the transportation of passengers, while the tanker or cargo ship is involved in the transportation of cargo not passengers. I think you will find the cruise ship to be a much more ';formal'; enviroment for this ship's officers than that of the cargo vessel.

The deck officers in the Merchant Marines with unlimited tonnage ratings are as follows:

Captain

Chief Mate

Second Mate

Third Mate

Deck officers may also hold inspected licenses as Captain or Mate with tonnage limitations of from 25 to 1600 tons.
